Abigail (Abi) Kim is currently a seventh semester at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. As a dual major in Music Business/Management (with a concentrate in Marketing) and Performance, Abi is a Voice principle. Abi is from Newport Beach, Southern California, and has been an aspiring artist for as long as she can remember. The performing arts is her one true love, and she have a tremendous passion for songwriting. Since she has been attending Berklee, she has been able to pursue her aspirations and passions and have been given opportunities to bring them to life. With the help of her mentors and peers at Berklee, she has been able to create and produce what she believes to be her original and authentic sound.

Abi is ethnically half Caucasian and half Asian— Korean, to be precise, and spent a portion of her life in South Korea. It may come to you as a surprise, but music wasn’t always what she expected to be her future. For the longest time, having grown up in Los Angeles, she was pretty set on fulfilling my initial dream to study and pursue screen acting. At least, this was true until she came to Korea.

Singing had always been a hobby of Abi’s, but she wasn’t ever told that she was particularly good at it, because she didn’t sing as often as she does now. She finally jumped on the bandwagon and recorded and filmed a couple of YouTube videos her Freshman year of High School, with her limited knowledge in Garageband and iMovie, but managed to figure it out and produced some decent music videos. Considering that Abi had started to get into this when she was only a Freshman in High School, she was pretty proud of the quality that was delivered.

Little did Abi know that there would actually come a time when a producer of a popular television audition program would reach out to via my Youtube channel. Abi was contacted in the beginning of her Junior year of High School, which was before she had to worry about International Baccalaureate examinations and College Applications. Therefore, she decided to take a leap of faith and took a chance on my singing skills which were, at that point, inexperienced and amateur.

Abi was surprisingly able to get pretty far on the television program, and as expected, being named ‘Top 11’ for the season brought a good amount of exposure and attention to her identity as an artist. Although she struggled through a lot of the behind-the-scenes reality and truths about the industry, it and the fact that she was pretty successful in the competition gave her the drive to give music a real shot.

It has been incredibly helpful that her parents are a hundred and ten percent supportive of the pursuit of her dreams, and the relationships that her parents and her grandparents have with people that are already heavily involved in the industry has helped Abi to successfully move her professional career forward.

Music is now central to who Abi is as an individual, and there is no other life that she would trade it for. Abi’s hope and goal before arriving at Berklee was to become a knowledgeable, well-rounded musician and artist, and that goal is being achieved in one aspect or another every single day.
